House of Defiance

This house became a deliberate challenge to conventional approaches to residential architecture and, in particular, to the developer’s expectations. Instead of the typical open front façade with large windows and a prominent entrance door, we chose to make the street-facing side almost completely closed.

The reason was the character of the site. The main façade faces a busy and noisy street, where a highly transparent frontage would have compromised the privacy and comfort of the future residents. Rather than following the usual formula, we designed a restrained, carefully composed façade that reveals very little to the street.

The number of windows on this side is therefore kept to a minimum. Where glazing is necessary, it is partially screened by breeze blocks, while other areas are softened and concealed by vegetation. Together, these elements create an additional buffer between the house and the street, enhancing privacy and helping to reduce the impact of external noise.

The architectural expression of the house is instead directed toward the private courtyard. Here, the façade opens up completely, creating a protected environment designed around the residents. A large cantilever extends into a covered barbecue area, while planted terraces on the second floor bring greenery into the architecture and soften its volumes.

The house consequently has two very different faces. From the street, it is restrained, private, and almost deliberately understated. From the courtyard, it becomes open, expressive, and closely connected to everyday life.

This contrast is the central idea of the project. The beauty of a house does not always need to be displayed to the outside world. Here, it is reserved primarily for the people who live inside. What might initially appear to be a limitation becomes the key architectural strategy for creating greater privacy, quiet, and everyday comfort.
