The defining feature of this house is its structural system, centered around CLT panels. Used for the roof structure, CLT becomes more than a construction material. It is one of the key elements shaping the architectural character of the project.
The exterior walls are built using ICF construction, allowing us to optimize the overall construction budget and allocate resources toward more expressive structural solutions. The roof and floor structure combines LVL beams with CLT panels, creating an efficient system capable of supporting substantial cantilevers and deep roof overhangs.
These generous overhangs and canopies give the house its distinctive character while also serving a practical purpose. All of the terraces are positioned beneath the roof structure, keeping them protected from rain and making the outdoor spaces significantly more usable throughout the year.
The second defining feature of the project is its extensive lower-ground floor. A common challenge with basement spaces is the lack of natural light. Here, we approached the problem by extending the basement walls beyond the footprint of the ground floor, creating a series of partially sunken courtyards around the house.
These courtyards bring natural light deep into the lower level. The gym, sauna, and shared basement spaces all open onto them, transforming what would traditionally be a dark and secondary floor into a fully functional part of the home.
The basement is therefore not treated as a storage or service area. It becomes a genuine additional level with natural daylight, dedicated functions, and a direct relationship with the outdoors. In this project, the structural system does more than support the architecture. It becomes an integral part of the architectural concept and helps shape a more comfortable way of living.
