Project Description

A Historic Townhouse Reimagined for Contemporary Living

Located in Jersey City directly across from Manhattan and just off the waterfront, this historic townhouse was completely reconstructed and transformed into a private residence for a single family.

The four-story building required a substantial rethinking of its internal structure. The renovation involved a complete redesign of the layout and virtually all interior spaces, including the staircase connecting the different functional levels of the house. At the same time, the building’s historic status required an extensive approval process and a particularly careful approach to its transformation.

The interior concept is based on a contemporary interpretation of Scandinavian minimalism with a distinct Japandi influence. A calm palette of beige tones, warm natural wood, clean forms, and soft textures creates an environment that feels restrained yet inviting. Large windows facing the private courtyard bring natural light deep into the house and establish a visual connection between the interior and the outdoor space.

One of the main objectives was to create a home where its residents could comfortably spend most of their time. The owners work from home and naturally gravitate toward a home-centered lifestyle, so the interior was conceived as a self-sufficient environment that brings together everyday living, work, and relaxation.

The program extends across all four levels and goes far beyond the traditional functions of a townhouse. Along with the main living spaces, the house includes a dedicated home office and areas designed specifically for leisure and entertainment. The lower level features an entertainment zone and sauna, complemented by an outdoor jacuzzi in the courtyard, allowing different scenarios for relaxation to become part of everyday life at home.

The result is a historic townhouse with an entirely new life on the inside. Behind its connection to the established urban context is a contemporary, warm, and highly personalized interior: a self-contained world for two, shaped around their routines and their idea of everyday comfort.
